Pileated woodpecker, 2020, oil on canvas, 30 x 40 cm

Woodpeckers have very long, barbed tongues to wriggle into the holes they poke in trees. There’s a lot of different species of woodpeckers, but they all have in common that they hang vertically on a tree and drill holes with their beaks at a speed of 20 pecks per second.

This painting is inspired by the colours and loud typography of the British tabloid press.
